Last night as my husband was on the internet, he came across a story that was in the news. It completely astounded me when my husband read off the title of the news story. It was Girl Gets Plastic Surgery To Avoid Bullying. First off when I read this, I was saddened that bullying has become such a big issue. I believe bullying can be cured in the home with correct parental guidance, work, and necessary punishments. However, in today's world, punishment is a big deal. It takes nothing for an individual to abusive when punishing a child. Therefore, I could also blame more than just parents for bullying become so rampid in our world. Second of all, I was sickened by the thought of a parent allowing this, let alone the medical personnel that okayed this procedure. Also, on the thought of bullying, adults need to think before they speak. Many times the things that come out adults mouths is ridiculous, and if a child or young adult was to say it, it would be considering bullying.
This child is only seven years old, and the parents felt like this was the only option so that girl would quit being teased about her ears. Her name is Samantha Shaw and she was born with "cup ears," she also had a "lop ear" on the right side, and the mother as well as the daughter worried that she would be bullied as she grew older, thus the reason for doing the plastic surgery. Her plastic surgeon stated that he would recommend plastic surgery on children depending on the issue. If it is cosmetic alone, he does not suggest it. However, with this girl, he feels like this is an issue that is much further than cosmetic and it is okay. This surgeon feels that any abnormalities will put children at a risk for being bullied.
As I watched the video of this child, it was hard for me to not be happy for the girl after she had the procedure because she looks so happy. http://news.yahoo.com/video/health-15749655/child-gets-plastic-surgery-to-avoid-bullies-24902719;_ylt=AmAgImRyLrcoxl3cbsrePx2z174F;_ylu=X3oDMTE3MTBtbjVlBHBvcwMyBHNlYwNtb3N0LXBvcHVsYXIEc2xrA2NoaWxkZ2V0c3BsYQ--#video=24918610 However, it is still sad that this girl had such a big procedure done at such a young age just because people today are so rude. Hopefully when people read this story, instead of just criticizing everyone involved like I was quick to do, I hope that it causes people to stop and think about what comes out of their mouths that causes these things to happen.
