Facebook and Bullying

Facebook is something that almost all of us have nowadays.  If we do not have one ourselves than one has at least probably heard of it.  I really enjoy my Facebook somedays, however, there are some days that it disgusts me.  Those are the days, as well as the days I'm overwhelmed by school, I just stay far away from Facebook.

This week has been one of those weeks that Facebook has disgusted me to the limit.  I am very frustrated by the people that get on there, and make comments on someone else's status that seem innocent, but yet you personally know that are intended to hurt or bring someone else down.  I saw that so many times this week that I decided I just had to stay away for a few days until this person cools down.  There is obviously not just one individual that does this unfortunately.  I just noticed this particular individual carrying on.

I did get curious however on the rules and regulations of facebook, so I looked them up.  Under the Terms section of Facebook I did find this.  Rule #6 under the Statement of Rights and Responsibilties of Users Safety portions states this, "You will not bully, intimidate, or harass any user."  http://www.facebook.com/#!/terms.php  I could probably get this user in trouble if I wanted to, but yet I don't know that Facebook would actually find what they are putting a problem unless they would have a way to see posts that this user puts and then deletes once they have caused the hurt intended.  I do feel bad for the people that are being harrassed though, and I may just get brave and report it one day.  Bullying is something I do not like, and I have always said I will not tolerate.  I don't feel like this should be an exception, but I need to find the courage to take action.  It may seem mild and innocent in and of itself right now, but as the anger towards the individuals grows, it could become serious.

Facebook is definitely an awesome resource when used for its intended purpose.  However, it is so easy to use it to bring someone down.  I hope that I can find the courage it takes to start speaking up whenever I notice that someone has been bullying via Facebook.

  1. People that bully and harass others do this because it makes them feel good about themselves. I don't have this characteristic in my blood. Call me a hippie but this would be a better place without the mean people that do this. That is funny that facebook has a rule against it, because it is obvious that it happens all the time.

  2. I very strongly agree with you, especially since there are so many younger children on Facebook and Myspace. I really think that with all of this new technology, bullying is becoming easier and more hurtful. These bullies feel as if since they are not face to face with people that they can just type whatever they want. I would report them for sure.
